Above the water, in this iceberg image, you will see the results but there are traits that lie below this that impact on our behaviour, actions and decisions.

And each action and decision you make manifest into results – so if you’re unhappy with your results, then what trait is having an impact on your behaivour?

How are your current skills, beliefs, values and identity or environment impacting your results? This is where the cause often stems from, so let’s explore what you can do to make a change for the better.

At the tip of the identity iceberg, you will see results. This is what we see externally and does not show everything that goes into making that result happen. Let’s explore…

Skills

Take a holistic view of your business, what skill are you lacking? We all give ourselves labels such as, “I’m bad at maths”. Whatever label you have given yourself, is it a skill you could acquire?

Many business owners have to wear multiple hats, from accounting to sales and marketing. The latter is an area that many business owners do not know how to master.

So what marketing skills would help you get the results you need?

Belief

What is your belief about your ability? Do you have a growth mindset?

Getting yourself in the right mindset with the right beliefs is a good place to start.

If you have the right belief and are consistent with your thinking then you are more likely to get the results you want.

Values

How do you like to work?  And, what do you value that would get you more business?

Unlike your beliefs, your values is about how you hold yourself and your customers to account. It’s important to communicate your values.

Identity

As mentioned in the entrepreneurial ladder, you have to have the right mindset to be successful in business.

You have to identify as a business owner because a business owner behaves differently to an employee or self-employed person.

For example, a builder often uses the term ‘on the tools’ to describe being hands-on with the job. You can easily see when a builder business owner has changed his mindset when he appears professional instead of in his typical tradesmen outfit.

What identity should you possess as a business owner?

Environment

Finally, the way you shape your environment can move the other stuff mentioned above.

So, which traits are impacting your results? If you can identify and overcome these you can make adjustments to your behaviour.

By changing your behaviour, you will give yourself the very best chance to make the right course of action needed to get your desired results.
